Crafting as a nervous habit?

I learned to knit and crochet over 4 years ago. What ended up happening is me producing a great deal of squares in all sorts of pattern stitches instead of actually making something. With a few exceptions thats what still sits in my knitting bag. Part of the problem is of course not being able to visualize what finished garments should look like and with what size yarn and needles to make them. I think crafting can be a coping mechanism if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to do.I don't regret this learning I have a decent facility with hook and needles. The other problem is not having seen other peoples handknits in progress to understand measuring shaping etc. The top down method on circular needles makes the most sense mentally but I'm not sure how translating that into a blouse or skirt would work. Does anyone else here know what I'm talking about and if so how did you overcome just playing with yarn to make functional garments? Thanks all. Tiffany

Have you not tried knitting from a pattern? I like doing that.
